SOUL SISTERHOOD

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.

– Pablo Picasso

Could you be gifted?

9 DIFFERENT TYPES OF INTELLIGENCE

In Western society, we often are thought to believe that intelligence comes in just one form. Since our school systems primarily focus on our intellectual intelligence, we are led to believe that to be intelligent, we have to be academically bright with a scholarly attitude. However, this just isn't so; in fact, there are multiple areas of intelligence.

Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence breaks down intelligence into  9 different areas. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to intelligence. Here they are as listed:

  1. Verbal-linguistic intelligence (well-developed verbal skills and sensitivity to the sounds, meanings, and rhythms of words)
  2. Logical-mathematical intelligence (ability to think conceptually and abstractly and capacity to discern logical and numerical patterns)
  3. Spatial-visual intelligence (capacity to think in images and pictures, to visualize accurately and abstractly)
  4. Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence (ability to control one's body movements and to handle objects skillfully)
  5. Musical intelligence (ability to produce and appreciate rhythm, pitch, and timber)
  6. Interpersonal intelligence (capacity to detect and respond appropriately to the moods, motivations, and desires of others)
  7. Intrapersonal intelligence (capacity to be self-aware and in tune with inner feelings, values, beliefs, and thinking processes)
  8. Naturalist intelligence (ability to recognize and categorize plants, animals, and other objects in nature)
  9. Existential intelligence/Spiritual intelligence (sensitivity and capacity to tackle deep questions about human existence such as, "What is the meaning of life? Why do we die? How did we get here?")

The theory is pretty interesting and provides another way to understand yourself. Want to find out if you're gifted? You can take Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence Test to see where your intelligence lies within the 9 different types and another from LonerWolf. GIFTEDNESS, A TRAIT OFTEN FOUND IN EMOTIONAL INTENSITY & EMPATHS

If you're a highly sensitive person, there is a good chance you may be emotionally intense, but you may also be considered gifted. Psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski developed a theory called the positive disintegration theory. He referred to emotional intensity as "overexcitabilities" or "supersensitivities," in his theory, he identified five areas in which children exhibit intense behaviors. They are psychomotor, sensual, emotional, intellectual, and imaginational. Having two or more may indicate that you're gifted and more than likely able to develop your personality fully.

His theory is based on the concept that there are five levels of personality growth. Most of the population will stay at level one. These are individuals who are not unique. Their life has been shaped by media and an education system that doesn't value individual expression and actual examination.

Level five is the visionaries. Every action they take is in line with their core values. They have strong acts of creative expression, usually through action, art, and social change. Then, everyone else is somewhere in between. Between levels two and four, an existential crisis begins to happen. A crisis like this represents a strong intention for personal growth.

The theory states that not everyone has what it takes to advance through all five levels. Most won't get past level two because they won't be able to handle their existential crisis. The most evident characteristic of people with the most development potential is how intensely a person experiences day-to-day emotions. The more stress and turmoil a person is exposed to, the more potential a personality has to develop. Kazimierz Dabrowski coined the term, calling it a "tragic gift."

I found this theory fascinating, as we live in a world that minimizes feelings. It's a reminder of how important it is to feel to heal to the point where growth occurs. I like the idea of looking at emotional intensity as a gift, something that could assist in one's development, rather than being looked at as something that should be numbed with medication or pathologized.

POST-TRAUMATIC GROWTH (PTG)

RESILIENCE VS PTG

Have you ever wondered how some people can undergo a traumatic experience and emerge seemingly unfazed, bouncing back in no time? These individuals possess a quality known as resilience. If you're like me, an emotionally intense and highly sensitive individual (which is likely if you're reading this), you may have encountered someone implying that you lack resilience at some point. It can be painful to hear, as it suggests that your emotions are insignificant and weak. However, there is some truth to the comment, but only partially.

If you're a person with resilience, that's great. Then you don't experience your traumas as getting rocked to the core. You can move on with minimal damage and perhaps bounce back. Yet, if you're an individual with resilience, then you don't have what is called post-traumatic growth (PTG). PTG was identified by psychologists Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun in the 1990s. Their research identifies specific individuals having gone through a traumatic event and then having it play a transformational role. Their research focused on 5 categories of growth and include the following:

Outcomes of PTG...

  • Recognize and embrace new opportunities.
  • Forge stronger relationships with loved ones and victims who have suffered similarly.
  • Gain a deeper appreciation for life.
  • Cultivate inner strength through the knowledge that has overcome hardships.
  • Their relationship with religion and spirituality changes and evolves.

Factors leading to post-traumatic growth

  • Brutally honest optimism
  • Perception of control over events
  • Coping style
  • Strong sense of self

Factors leading to post-traumatic growth:

  • Therapy
  • Learning about trauma
  • Community support

People who experience PTG experience their trauma as getting rocked to their core. Getting their worldview challenged makes them take a turn for the better. Instead of bouncing back as a resilient person, they experience a significant amount of more pain. Yet, they go through a process where they grow from their traumas and develop into a better version of themselves.

Post-traumatic growth is encouraged by the willingness to acknowledge that what has happened to you was traumatic. Instead of minimizing what happened to you or adopting a story or attitude that brings false positivity, people who experience post-traumatic growth process the trauma to grow from it.

About half to two-thirds of trauma survivors are estimated to experience post-traumatic growth. The study has identified specific characteristics as making someone more likely to experience PTG, such as:

  • Being a woman and an adult at the time of the trauma.
  • Someone who possesses the personality traits of openness to experience.
  • Being reflective and introspective in nature.
  • Having the curiosity and desire to understand yourself, your pain, and what happened to you.
